Naadam occurs once a year during the
month of July, lasting for about a week. Each July, thousands upon thousands of
Mongolians travel to the capital city of Ulaanbaatar to participate in the games. The word
Naadam means the 3 manly sports, which is a misnomer, as the horseracing is done by
children, archery by both men and women, and only wrestling is solely for the men.
Opening Ceremony
The opening of the Naadam festival reminded me of
the opening of the Olympics, full of pomp and circumstances. The horsemen are carrying
Mongolian old style flags which are made out of horsetails.
